CounterCurrents: Kurdistan’s Referendum Gamble

Dear Friend,

Iraqi Kurds took a gamble by conducting a referendum for independence. It has not gone down well with the power centers in Baghdad and    Ankara. Baghdad has announced that they will not recognise the results. Erdogan has threatened to turn off the taps through which future Kurdish republic's oil will flow and even ethnic strife. Game on!

Female students of Banaras Hindu University demanding a sexual-violence free campus were beaten up by the police and cases were slapped upon over 1000 students.

  Kurdistan’s Referendum Gamble
by Dr Binoy Kampmark

What a gamble, and a seemingly ugly one. The merchants of propaganda have naturally been busy with this new, and petulant, kid on the block.  Three areas of Iraqi Kurdistan have gone to the polls for a referendum that is intended to add meat to the bone of any future negotiations for secession.  The desk minders in Baghdad are fuming; regional power brokers are minding their military inventories.

Trump’s Belligerance At The UN Has Its Costs
by Dr Arshad M Khan

To say Donald Trump’s UN speech last week was an embarrassment for his country is to understate the case; to say it made the U.S. a laughing stock is closer to the mark.

The Legacy of Balfour – 100 Years of Betrayal And Suffering : A report from the refugee camps of Lebanon
by Heather Stroud

All oppressive empires fall. This global corporate Zionist alliance is no exception. It is only a matter of time before the voices of the oppressed.., of their narrative….. will be heard. The volume and weight of their truth and rightness will be so powerful that it will no longer be able to be silenced.

Quadriga
by Gaither Stewart

And yesterday, unbelievably, like a recurrent incubus to most people, but a return to the future for others, the election to Parliament and as the nation’s third political party, the Alternative For Germany (Alternative Für Deutschland), a neo-Nazi grouping composed of many persons who resemble those of Adolf Hitler and voted for by hoodlum, self-declared Nazis.

State Repression On BHU Women Students Demanding A Sexual-Violence Free Campus Is A Blot On The Constitution!
by National Alliance of People’s Movements

National Alliance of People’s Movements condemns the Uttar Pradesh Govt’s violent, cowardly and indefensible crack down on the young women-students led movement in the BHU campus, seeking a University space with equal rights for women and freedom from sexual harassment and violence.

The BHU Lathicharge: A Diagnosis
by Vidya Bhushan Rawat

I can bet as why BHU was not called anti national as JNU because it is the den of the brahmanical hegemonists and if this too is gone to the mad sad bad people who challenge it then it would be difficult to control. BHU impact the politics in eastern Uttar Pradesh like Allahabad University or Gorakhpur University. Politics in Uttar Pradesh have been influenced by the student leadership in the past too. You can see that in none of these universities, you will find girls contesting, not even the Upper caste girls.

Why Are We Silent On The Grave Threat To Prof Kancha Illaiah
by Vidya Bhushan Rawat

If you don’t like Mr Kancha Illaiah or any one like him, don’t read him, switch off your TV or if you are reasonable enough then counter him ideologically and argumentatively through various mediums. Each one of have various options including social media and it should be used to strengthen the debates but don’t fall prey to the political goons who are only using sentiments to spread hatred and promote their political interest. Prof KanchaIllaiah must be provided all the security that he needs as well as those threatening to kill him must be prosecuted.
